If you care about the environment, you’ve hopefully looked at ways to reduce your impact. Now that Mkr.house has been operating for a year, we can see how the impact of living in a shared, energy efficient setting compares to the US average:

Shelter

MakerHouse was built with sustainability in mind — it’s 20% better insulated than code requires and is 100% electric (no fossil fuels / natural gas).

Our residents consume 3,600 kWh/yr from local solar and a clean energy plan. This results in ~180 kg/yr of emissions and costs just $396/yr

This is compared to 3,180 kg/yr and $845/yr for the US average² — MakerHouse residents have an incredible 17x less emissions!

And, since the majority of our electricity comes from local solar, our costs won’t increase over time.

Even if you don’t want to live in a shared setting, you should be able to achieve a similarly small impact by living in a small (~800 sqft/person), well-insulated house powered by clean electricity.

Local Transportation

Because MakerHouse is centrally located, our residents are able to live a reduced-car lifestyle. By choosing to walk, bike and bus when possible, our shared Tesla Model Y averages ~5,000 mi/yr/person (1/3rd the US average).
